We're at the beginning of week three in Luna's recovery from TPO surgery for hip dysplasia. Saying it's been a rough road is so cliche and I don't think I can come up with an analogy to better crystalize what the past few weeks have been like for us.
During her first week home, Luna stood up from her bed and blood began pouring out from one of her sutures. At 10 pm. I rushed her to the vet to learn this was normal -- just a release of fluid (serum) from the wound. And so our new "normal" routine is washing blood stains from blankets, towels, and my favorite pair of Lucky jeans thanks to little brushes against Luna Lovegood. After two more trips to the vet, the incision was stitched for the third time and continues to heal, although it did start to bleed again this morning. Even with her lamp shade, Luna still manages to be crafty to nip at the sutures.
Luna still spends much of her day in her crate, on her bed in the living room or at the foot of our bed. But she's still a puppy and she wants to play (she's even managed to chew the corner of our living room trunk, which shows she's still mischeveous). Moving about or jumping could cause the steel plates and screws to dislodge from her hips. We've had to give her small doses of Benadryl to keep her calm.
She still moans and groans. And if you scratch behind her long, floppy ears, she'll look lovingly in your eyes while she turns her muzzle into your hands to tell you how much she loves you.
Three weeks down of her "confinement," two more to go until she can go for a short walk and build up to longer, leisurely strolls. Counting the days...
