It's Saturday afternoon and we're a napping house the boys and pup are napping. Every sound reverberates off our stucco walls, putting a damper on my current home improvement project: converting a misused, unorganized closet into a functional, organized workspace.
I've been sharing an office/playroom with the boys for three years. Both have taken a keen interest in anything and everything on my desk. I knew I needed a fix when I found Q. sitting at my laptop with my headset on, pretending to be on the phone while tapping away. Cute, sure. Until your kid has somehow renamed files on your desktop and executed power commands you didn't even know existed.
So the closet-soon-to-be-workspace.
I can't work in the closet because we're a napping house. Instead, I'm researching some "how-to" basic items on my checklist, like install an electrical outlet and light fixture. I came across this cool site called Be Jane. They tag themselves the "The Women's Home Improvement Community for Do-It-Yourself Projects." The site is like a Homeowner's 101 for women with basic instructions on how to caulk a sink, install pathway lights (this one also has a video) in your front or back yard, or install a drip system. I'm having fun reading about all the Featured Jane's -- it's inspiring to see what other gals have built on their own.
I've received a bid for the electrical work we need to have completed for this closet-workspace conversion and while I'm happy to have someone else do the labor, there's a side of me that feels like it's so basic I should be able to handle it. Except I have this tiny fear that I'll a) electrocute myself; b) burn down the house a la "Money Pit" when all the circuits and wiring catch fire; or c) both. I also have no interest in crawling under the house or into the attic. Ick, ick, ick.
I think I just talked myself out of doing the DIY electrical work. It's overrated. (Just don't tell my dad I said that.)
I'll post before and after photos of the closet when it's done...
