Six spent a few days with the grandparents last week ("I'm on vacation, Mommy!"), thankfully during one of the most miserable storms ever to hit our area. Grandma and Grandpa were ready to douse him with affection and attention, as only grandparents can.
On Saturday morning my dad took Six to Home Depot's kid's workshop, which is free and takes place the first Saturday of each month. The bird feeders and shelves he's made in the past have long since been buried in the depths of our garage. But his new creation is something he'll be keeping for a long, long time.
Witness: The Castle.
I was impressed with the quality of the kit Home Depot provided to the kids. The holes were pre-drilled, which meant Six didn't get frustrated trying to pound tiny tiny nails into small pieces of wood. The best part was that he could say he made it by himself...his smile was blinding.
But what's even more endearing is what the Castle holds. Six pulled the lid off and there sat a white handkerchief, perfectly folded (and clean, thank you).
"It's Grandpa's handkerchief. He gave it to me, and I keep it here to keep it safe. It smells just like Grandpa."
Who would have known Home Depot could make a mama cry in a good way?
Put the Home Depot workshop on your calendar now -- it's February 2nd.
(No, I'm not being paid by Home Depot to write this -- these free workshops kick arse.)
