Luna Lovegood likes raw carrots, especially fresh ones that arrive in our CSA box. But like any other treat she receives at home, she has to work for it. I usually make her sit, lie down or speak (the latest trick). But today, I picked up a pair of bunny ears and knew I'd need to save the carrots for a little photo session. (You may recall the pink session?)
I usually only give her tiny pieces of carrots (we've already had our fill of puppy medical issues; no need to cause more problems). But for this particular photo, I knew she'd require some serious cajoling. I set an entire carrot on the floor, hoping she'd plant herself down and allow me to get at least a few quick shots. But she's too quick for me, and I ended up chasing her down to grab the carrot from her. All while the ears loosely dangled from her head. With a final brush of her paw, she tossed them aside, as if to say, "Lady, get this sh*t off of me."
I'm convinced I need to bring out the big guns. Attempt number two awaits.

It may officially be spring, but the weather has yet to internalize the need to shift its gears from cold and overcast to warm and blue sky. And when skies do clear, the temperature still calls for cozy comfort food.

I've been participating in an online craft workshop hosted by the ladies of Red Velvet Art. We're supposed to make 30 projects over eight weeks (heh). I signed up looking two reasons: one, for inspiration to create art for our home and two, to find ideas for gifts.

Two weeks ago I was bedridden with a double ear infection, a sinus infection and bronchitis (read: a complete mess). I was in the process of scheduling a trip down to Malibu to talk to Rick Springfield about a lullaby album that he's releasing. Suddenly a date was tossed at me and I was in full "must-recover-quickly" mode.
I do not take for granted, not even for a second, that my job as a journalist and writer gives me the privilege to meet and speak with some of the most interesting (and sometimes adorable) individuals. It's a neat gig (and I'm sad to see that the newspaper that helped me launch my career is on the verge of closing up shop).
When I interview Rick Springfield, however, I feel this strong need to do right by his legion of very dedicated fans. I want to ask him questions that they want to ask him. Questions that other reporters don't bother to ask. I'm always honored that he so freely speaks with me about his family, his childhood, and his life as a dad. Even when the answers are sometimes tough or sometimes touch a deep feeling.
Last week, I met Rick for coffee on his turf. I'm in the process of editing the video to appear on Yahoo! Shine, and will post a teaser when it's live (filming outdoors at a coffee shop poses some inherent challenges and problems, which have to get scrubbed).
Several folks have asked me what
it's like to interview Rick now that I've met with him time and
again."He knows who you are by now," is the most common remark. The man gave me a personal guitar lesson, for the love of pete. The reality is he always asks me my name. I stand speechless for about five seconds. He needs a quick refresher
course on when we last spoke. And ten seconds later, we fall into a
familiar banter. This quick clip should give you an idea of how serious and composed we remain throughout our conversations.
Side note: I'm feeling much better (Thanks to those of you who emailed me!). I managed to stay on track with my Project 365 photojournal, only it's up to date on my Flickr account. I'll move forward posting the images here after my personal laptop is fixed.

Thoughts of a hot, sunny spring and summer fill my head. Nearly everyone I know is sick with a cold or flu. My boys have had had a perpetual runny nose for weeks. And I know cold and flu season is serious business when my husband gets a man cold.
But a grown woman with a double ear infection along with yet another sinus infection? I issue a pathetic sigh, "This could only happen to me." Quickly followed by, "It could be worse."
It was my intention to post a week's worth of travel tips for Kauai. Can I just go back for a tiny visit to conduct more research?

365 day 46: Breakfast by the boys
