I'm at BlogHer but had to share this video clip because it ties into something I just posted on Shine. I warn you now; there is more video to come. Because yes, we can be dorkier. And because he shared some great stuff that I know his fans will love. (And as always, thank you to Rick's PR folks and agents for giving Yahoo! Shine (and me) access to him. And a huge thank you to Rick for taking time to chat with me. Next time...bring Gomer!)
There are songs that you hear and when you truly listen, the words filter through your ears and find their way to your soul. You will be shocked to read this, but it recently happened to me with a song by -- can you guess? -- Rick Springfield.
The song, I'll Miss That Someday, is one off his latest album, Venus in Overdrive. The song apparently is about the relationship between his bass player and the guy's dad, but can be applied to any relationship. And when I heard this chorus, I immediately thought of my boys:
"you and I
Will love when love's invisible..."
and
"...take the time
When life in unpredictable, take the time to say
I'll miss that someday."
My parents often tell the boys stories about me as a kid. Silly stories, tales of sibling rivalry and reports of my mischief as a tot. And in their voices and eyes, you can how they relish those memories. Did they think "I'll miss that someday" ? Probably not. It's too easy to get lost in whatever else you're doing at that moment.
This song, it's a reminder to take a breath. To listen to your kid when, just as you're about to get dinner ready and he wants to go the park, to go. Even for a 15 minutes. To stop getting riled about your kids arguing, to find a more productive way to solve the problem, to realize that someday, those chatterbox voices will be quiet. And you'll miss that, too, even when you can't imagine missing it.
I love this song, not just because of the way I apply it to my kids, but to life in general. Since I had my little epiphany, I've used this mantra, "I'll miss that someday," to other parts of my world. And it's like a little sigh and little smile. And it doesn't hurt that, well, someone I dig is singing the song.
Since I know many of you are not likely to hear this song on your own, here's a video of Mr. Springfield singing "I'll Miss That Someday" at a concert. The footage is a little wonky, but one, you get a good listen to the song and too, he looks cute. (And the high note at 2:12? Shazam.)
Take a listen, if you choose. But do tell: what songs find their way into your soul?
Do not steal my stuff -- writing, photos, or both -- or republish it without my written permission to do so. Otherwise I will track you down and force you to listen to my kids whine. All. day. long. And then we'll let the legal folks deal with you. Okay. Thanks.
